ASC Projects is pleased to present The Rebus Names Project, an exhibition of new digital works by artist and DJ, Tim Roseborough, challenging the intellectual and financial inaccessibility of art by creating free and personalized artworks for the social media community. The exhibition is on view September 5 to October 11 17 (extended), 2014, with an opening reception on Friday, September 5, 2014, 7 to 9 pm.

The project will be accompanied by a website, rebusnames.com, which will document all of the artworks made. In addition, the general public will be invited to participate in the program by visiting the gallery during special events hosted throughout the length of the exhibition.

Aferiat-PaulIn his continuing exploration of play, games, and puzzles, Roseborough creates rebus word puzzles—image-based puzzles where words are represented by combinations of pictures and individual letters—from the names of participants and volunteers. Beginning with friends in his social media network, the artist created a series of visual puzzles inspired by the direct aesthetics of stock illustration, internet memes, and John Baldessari. The works are disseminated as Facebook profile images to each person, and exhibited in the gallery as a video slideshow and a selection of archival prints.

The Rebus Names Project is a new installment in his ongoing series of “gifting performances” —including Take One (2012-2014), A Black Box (2014), and All Fit Together (2011). These works function as a bridge between the public and art, but this playful approach to creating personalized art is not only a display of generosity and good will, but a response to the over commercialization of art and culture. “In this time of rising rents, evictions and an art world that excludes many due to cost and intellectual snobbery, I hope that this artistic act of gifting can serve as an antidote to the increasing inaccessibility of contemporary art.”

Kahn-SpikeTim Roseborough’s artwork and exhibitions can be seen in numerous publications, including Artforum, Art In America, ARTnews, Hyperallergic.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, SF Arts Monthly, the SF Examiner, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian. He has performed and shown artwork at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the 2012 and 2010 ZERO1 New Media Biennials, SOMArts, Pro Arts Gallery, Root Division, Performance Art Institute, Artexpo New York, The Garage, Yerba Buena Night art festival, and Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco. In 2012, Mr. Roseborough presented “A Puzzling Display,” an online artwork and accompanying exhibition at the New Art Center, New York. He was a nominee for the 2012 SFMOMA SECA Award and was awarded residencies at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, ASC Projects in San Francisco, and School of Visual Art in New York, among others.
